Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about creating printable search-area maps, search grids, team assignment and SAR mapping workflows with Searchgrid.app.
- What is Searchgrid.app?
- Searchgrid.app is a free, browser-based mapping tool for search-and-rescue (SAR) and emergency response teams. It turns a drawn area into a printable search grid with team assignments and exports a professional PDF for field use.
- How do I create a printable search area map?
- Open the planner, draw a rectangle or polygon on the map, set the cell size in metres and the number of teams, click Generate search plan, then Export PDF. The PDF includes an overview map and one detailed page per cell.
- What is a search grid and why use one?
- A search grid divides a search area into evenly sized cells (sectors) so teams can systematically cover ground without gaps or overlap. Each cell gets an identifier (A1, A2, …) that maps cleanly to radio communication and field reporting.
- Can I assign cells to specific teams?
- Yes. Set the number of teams and Searchgrid.app distributes cells evenly with colour coding per team. The exported PDF lists which cells belong to which team.
- Does Searchgrid.app support MGRS coordinates?
- Yes. After generating a plan you can export an MGRS-compatible file for use in other mapping or coordination systems.
- Is operational data stored on a server?
- No. All drawing and grid generation runs locally in the browser. There are no accounts and no central store of operational data.
- Is Searchgrid.app an emergency service?
- No. Searchgrid.app is a mapping tool, not an emergency service. In an emergency call 112 (EU) or your local emergency number.
- What does it cost?
- Searchgrid.app is free to use for search-and-rescue and emergency response organisations.
