SAR teams divide a search area into uniform cells so each team gets a clearly defined zone. MGRS labels (e.g. A1, B2) on top of MGRS coordinates make field communication unambiguous and radio-friendly.
Recommended cell sizes
- 50–100 m — dense forest, urban search, evidence sweeps
- 250–500 m — typical SAR ground search in mixed terrain
- 1 km+ — open terrain, aerial / drone search, large-area sweeps
